Registering to Practice Veterinary Medicine in Jamaica

Governed by the Veterinary Act (1975) and administered by the Jamaica Veterinary Board.

The practice of Veterinary Medicine in Jamaica is governed by the Veterinary Act (1975) and the Veterinary Regulations. These are administered by the Jamaica Veterinary Board. In order to legally practice Veterinary Medicine in Jamaica, a veterinarian must be registered by the Board. The general registration process is as follows:

  1. 1

To be eligible for registration, a veterinarian must be a graduate of an accredited university that is recognized by the Board. The Board may be contacted for further information.

  2. 2

An application for registration must be filed, with supporting documentation and the required fee paid.

  3. 3

The applicant will then be required to sit and pass a written examination. The National Examination for the Registration of Veterinarians (NERV) is offered twice yearly (July and November).

  4. 4

Applicants who pass the examination are interviewed by the Board.

  5. 5

Once registration is approved, the applicant will be added to the gazetted list of veterinarians registered to practice veterinary medicine in Jamaica.

Thereafter, all registered veterinarians must pay an annual renewal fee to the Board to be eligible to continue practicing.

Veterinarians visiting Jamaica for a specific purpose may be granted temporary registration by the Board. In this case, such individuals must be graduates of a recognized veterinary institution and must be registered or licensed to practice veterinary medicine in their country of residence. A fee may be required for such temporary registration.
